What to do if you Drive into Your Garage Door?

It is surprisingly common to hear from customers who have driven or reversed into their garage doors. Many people have done it and will continue to do it, so instead of worrying about it, it’s best to focus on ensuring your door is safe and secure.

If you’ve driven or reversed into your garage door and you’re wondering what to do, here’s our advice.

  • Look at the damage.

The first thing to do is stay calm, and after checking that everyone (including yourself!) is safe, it’s time to assess the damage sustained to the door. If you can’t see any visible damage and only hit the door at a low speed, the chances are everything will be fine; however, we still recommend contacting a specialist garage door company before opening the door. Even though everything looks okay from the outside, there could have been internal damage to the door or its parts which means it may not open or close properly.

  • Take photos of the damage.

If there is visible damage, we recommend taking pictures of the damage to both your garage door and your vehicle, as you may need these for both your home and car insurance providers.

  • Contact an expert.

Next, we recommend contacting a garage door specialist like John Glen Garage Doors before opening the garage door, as you may cause further damage to internal parts and controls by doing so.
